There's nothing better than closing the door to my sewing room and allowing myself to slip into the creative flow. Sewing is my personal therapy but just like any hobby, it can be really frustrating if your tools aren't working the way you want them too. This article will cover the essential tools you need to get started on your sewing journey as well as some of my favorite "non-essential" picks. Let's get started!
I am all for saving money anywhere I can, so first we will start with the absolute basics.
- A Sewing Machine-If you don't already have one, this is what I use and recommend for beginners. https://amzn.to/4d0KZcU
- Thread- Do not skimp here. The generic threads are not strong enough to withstand a lot of wear and tear. I recommend all-purpose threads from Hobby Lobby or Coats and Clark from Wal-Mart.
- Bobbins- Your machine likely came with some, but if you need extras, here is a great set. Please note, different machines take different bobbins. This is an example of bobbins from my machine. https://amzn.to/4sVS6YZ
- Sewing Scissors-DEDICATE THESE TO YOUR FABRIC STASH. These are the scissors we use for sewing classes https://amzn.to/4u9iMXn
- Pins or Clips- Having pins available will be handy, but I LOVE using clips for sewing. It takes so much less time (and less poking of my fingers). These are the ones I use: https://amzn.to/4cFqTDA
- Seam Ripper- This tool is your friend and usually your machine will come with one, but if it doesn't, you can find one at Wal-Mart for just a few bucks.
- Sewing Machine Needles- Your machine likely also came with these as well, but you'll want to know which needles to use for specific projects. Most beginner-friendly projects will require Universal Needles (https://amzn.to/4cs2J0M) or Ball Point Needles (https://amzn.to/3OF5baT)
- Marking tools and measuring tools- I really love using my acrylic ruler for easy measuring. Pair it with some water-soluble markers and you're set! https://amzn.to/4u1bpAS and https://amzn.to/4mHPigu
- And lastly, an iron and ironing board- Having wrinkle-free fabric allows for more accurate cuts, prettier seams, and overall better-looking projects. https://amzn.to/42pmpfG and https://amzn.to/48dBF2L
If you have decided that sewing is something you want to do on a more frequent basis, there are a few other products that I highly suggest adding to your stash.
- A Rotary Cutter- This tool will save you so much time in your sewing journey. https://amzn.to/4mLgf2N
- A Cutting Mat- If you have the cutter, you need the mat to go with it. I personally use the larger mat because I cut a lot at one time and enjoy not having to move my fabric so often, but you can choose a smaller size. https://amzn.to/4tvSxdE
- A Seam Magnet- Completely optional, but this tool helps to keep a consistent seam allowance throughout your project. https://amzn.to/4sVVxil
- Lastly, Pattern Weights- Again, not necessary, but if you want them, these are my recommendation: https://amzn.to/4cH7Jxg Disclaimer here: canned food, cell phones, tape dispensers, the clip box, water bottles... they ALL work for pattern weights. So, if you want to, save your money here.
